Swim Lessons Aren’t Optional.

They’re Part of Injury Prevention.

When people hear “private swim lessons,” they often think of faster times.

I think of healthier shoulders.

That may sound surprising until you understand one thing:

Swimming is one of the few sports where athletes repeat the same movement thousands of times every week.

If that movement is technically incorrect, the body doesn’t simply perform inefficiently.

It adapts to the mistake.

Eventually, it gets injured.

I Learned This the Hard Way

I was a backstroker.

When something didn’t feel right, I asked my coaches what I was doing wrong.

They couldn’t tell me.

That wasn’t because they weren’t good coaches.

It was because they weren’t backstroke specialists.

Most swim coaches aren’t.

Backstroke is unique because it’s the only competitive stroke performed without visual feedback. You spend the entire race looking at the ceiling. Your technique depends heavily on proprioception, body position, timing, and “feel.”

When your feel changes, you need someone who understands exactly what you’re experiencing.

If they can’t identify the technical problem, you keep repeating it.

Thousands of times.

Why Individual Coaching Matters

I was fortunate enough to learn from an Auburn National Champion and 100 Back Olympic Trials qualifier who trained under David Marsh during Auburn’s championship years.

He taught me backstroke technique.

He taught me underwater dolphin kicking.

He taught me details that completely changed how I moved through the water.

By age 16, my underwaters were better than almost anyone in my area.

Looking back, I understand why.

My club team didn’t train underwaters.

Not one.

Today, that’s almost impossible to imagine.

Team Practice and Individual Development Are Different Jobs

I did exactly what my coaches asked during practice.

Then I assigned myself extra credit.

I practiced the technical drills I learned during swim tutoring.

Not because I wanted to ignore my coaches.

Because I needed technical instruction my training environment couldn’t provide.

That experience completely changed how I coach today.

Every practice set has a purpose.

But not every athlete needs the exact same correction.

Some swimmers need a different drill.

Some need a different cue.

Some need an entirely different technical progression.

That’s coaching.

Backstroke Is Especially Vulnerable

One incorrect pull isn’t usually what causes an injury.

It’s repeating that incorrect pull hundreds of times every practice…

Thousands of times every week…

Millions of times over an entire career.

Research has consistently shown that shoulder pain is one of the most common injuries in competitive swimmers. While many factors contribute, stroke mechanics, training volume, muscle imbalance, and recovery all play important roles. Improving technique is one of the modifiable factors that can reduce unnecessary stress on the shoulder.¹²

That’s why I no longer see private swim lessons as something that simply makes swimmers faster.

I see them as healthcare.

The Goal Isn’t Faster.

The Goal Is Healthier.

At AthleteRx Swim Clinic℠, we don’t believe swim lessons are a luxury.

We believe they’re individualized education.

Just as a math tutor helps identify learning gaps before grades suffer, swim tutoring helps identify technical errors before they become chronic pain, inefficient movement, or lost performance.

I’ve even developed backstroke drills that help swimmers develop body position and feel without requiring every coach to be a high-level backstroke specialist.

Because the reality is simple.

Most coaches aren’t former elite backstrokers.

They don’t have to be.

But every swimmer deserves access to technical instruction that helps them move safely and efficiently through the water.

Swimming faster is a benefit.

Swimming healthier is the goal.
